Why choose a Timber Workshop instead of a garage?

Perhaps the most easy to personalise timber building we manufacture, a wooden workshop can be so much more than a workshop. A Chart garden workshop is built to the same high strength levels as our garages. Using pressure treated timber, thick framing and a high specification roof, these are significant timber buildings – not a shed.

Ideal where a garage may be too large or you don’t need double doors, the Chart workshop can be tailored to your needs. From woodworking space to hobby room, large windows or fully insulated store, the options are nearly endless.

Design Your Wooden Workshop Or Studio

Many workshops take a small space in a garden, fitting a specific need: somewhere for exploring a growing hobby, space for children outside the main house, or the start of a new business based at home. You likely know the space you need, but this is the start of an exciting personalisation process. It is also worth reading our guide to common timber workshop mistakes and how to avoid them before you begin.

Choose from large or small, single or double glazed windows, double or single doors, space to drive a quad in, a secure door for guests or internal lining. We build around you and work with you to make sure you get a workshop, office or hobby space to suit your own needs.

As a timber workshop or studio is often built in a garden, local planning rules may require certain height or size restrictions. For this very reason we offer different roof styles that can maximise internal space without straying outside permitted development rules. (Always check with your local planning department.)

Roof shape, timber cladding choices and window and door styles will edge your timber building towards a traditional or contemporary style, and the Chart team are on hand to help and guide you through this process. We manufacture, deliver and install your workshop nationwide, or you can choose a DIY kit.

A Workshop, Not A Shed

A Chart workshop is built to the same high strength levels as our garages, using pressure treated timber, thick framing and a high specification roof. That makes it a substantial, long-lasting building rather than a lightweight garden shed. It is the right choice if you want a space you will spend real time in – whether that is a woodworking workshop, a home office, a studio or a hobby room.

Ways To Use Your Workshop

Because every workshop is tailored to you, it can be far more than a place to store tools. Popular uses include a woodworking or hobby workshop, a home office, an art or craft studio, a fully insulated store, or a flexible space for a home-based business. Add large windows for natural light, internal lining and insulation for year-round comfort, or a secure door for visitors, and we will build around the way you want to work.

Do You Need Planning Permission For A Garden Workshop?

A garden workshop may be covered under permitted development rights, but height and size limits often apply, particularly close to boundaries. We offer different roof styles that can maximise internal space while helping you stay within permitted development rules, and we can assist with drawings where a planning application is needed. For more, see our guide to whether garages need planning consent, and always check with your local planning department before you build.

Workshop FAQs

What is the difference between a timber workshop and a shed?

A Chart workshop is built to the same high strength levels as our garages, using pressure treated timber, thick framing and a high specification roof. That makes it a substantial, long-lasting building designed for spaces you will spend real time in, rather than a lightweight garden shed.

Do you need planning permission for a garden workshop?

A garden workshop may be covered under permitted development rights, but height and size limits often apply, especially close to boundaries. We offer different roof styles that help maximise internal space while staying within permitted development rules, and we can assist with drawings where a planning application is needed. Always check with your local planning department before you build.

Can a timber workshop be used as a home office?

Yes. Our workshops are easy to personalise and are a popular choice for home offices, studios and hobby rooms as well as woodworking. Add large windows for natural light, internal lining and insulation for year-round use, and a secure door for visitors.

Can a workshop be insulated?

Yes. As each building is made to order, you can specify internal lining and a fully insulated store, making the workshop comfortable to use throughout the year.

Do I need footings or a base for my workshop?

For smaller workshops (3.6m x 3.6m and under) we can offer a stand-alone solution that simply needs a level concrete base. For larger workshops our team will advise on the right concrete base for your building.

What sizes and layouts of workshop can I choose?

Workshops can be specified from small garden buildings upward, with single or double glazed windows, single or double doors, and even space to drive a quad in. The Chart team will help you choose the size, roof shape, cladding and door and window styles to suit your needs.

Workshop Pricing Examples

Every timber workshop we build is handcrafted to order, so the final price depends on the size, layout, cladding, roofing and options you choose. To give you a starting point, indicative prices are shown in the pricing examples below, and you can build your own specification online for a tailored quote. A small garden workshop starts from £6,500 + VAT, but we can build almost any size and configuraton. If you would prefer to talk it through, our design team is happy to help.
