Why choose a Wooden Carport?

A wooden carport is an understated garaging option, designed to provide simple protection for your car. And although a carport is relatively minimalistic compared to a traditional garage or carriage house, when finished with our characteristic Chart curved bracing, a wooden carport is an elegant and attractive addition to any driveway.

Our wooden carports are built to last, constructed with your choice of pressure-treated, sustainably sourced European softwood or oak framing. Similar in style to our traditional carriage houses but with open sides, our timber carports are crafted to meet your specific design and functional requirements and are a marriage of durability and attention to detail.

Design Your Wooden Carport

We build your carport to order and our team of skilled designers will work with you to create a carport that perfectly aligns with your specifications. Choose from a range of size options such as a single bay carport, double bay carport or triple bay carport, but we also offer made-to-order sizes for larger or smaller vehicles, and our carports can easily be designed for up to 5+ cars.

Choose from three different roof styles such as a traditional gable roof (full height at either end), barn hip (half hip), or full hip. Equally, the roof finish itself can alter the aesthetics of your carport. As standard we offer hard-wearing Onduvilla roof tiles, but with an optional pitch increase, clay or slate tiles are possible (these finishes to be added by your own tiler). Worth considering also are Tapco slates or the timeless and natural look of cedar shingles. Our guide to garage roof options walks through the pros and cons of each.

But the customisation doesn’t end there. If you want one or more sides of your carport enclosed, we offer the option to add weatherboard or shiplap clad walls as well as doors. This added feature can provide your vehicle with enhanced protection from the elements and additional security. The result is a versatile, multi-purpose space that goes beyond merely sheltering your vehicle. If you want the carport entirely enclosed, then consider a carriage house.

All our wooden carports are designed and constructed in our specialised workshop in Kent. This allows us to maintain rigorous quality control at every stage of the building process. The Chart Garages team can help to guide you through timber choices as well as roofing options and even assist with planning drawings. We manufacture, deliver and install nationwide (or you can choose a DIY kit), offering you a seamless, hassle-free experience from initial consultation to final installation.

At Chart Garages, we believe that a wooden carport can be more than just a functional space; it can be a stylish, custom-built extension of your home. Choose Chart Garages, and experience the difference that quality craftsmanship and personalisation can make.

The Benefits Of A Wooden Carport

A carport is a cost-effective alternative to a full garage when your main aim is to keep a vehicle protected from the elements. Because it is open-sided, it is simpler and more affordable than an enclosed garage or carriage house, and it is often easier to position on a driveway. A timber carport keeps rain, frost and falling leaves off your car, helps protect the paintwork and makes winter mornings easier, all while adding an attractive, characterful structure to your home. And if your needs change, our carports can have one or more sides enclosed with clad walls and doors for extra shelter and security – or you can step up to a fully enclosed carriage house.

Do You Need Planning Permission For A Carport?

A carport may be covered under permitted development rights, depending on its size and where it sits in relation to your boundaries and highway. Because carports are often positioned close to a driveway or boundary, it is worth checking the rules carefully – our guide to building near a boundary is a helpful read. Our team can assist with planning drawings where they are needed. Always check with your local planning department before you build.

Carport FAQs

How much does a wooden carport cost?

Every carport is handcrafted to order, so the price depends on the number of bays, the roof style and material, whether you choose softwood or oak framing, and whether any sides are enclosed. You can build your own specification online for a tailored quote, or see the single, double and triple bay pricing examples on this page.

Do you need planning permission for a wooden carport in the UK?

A carport may be covered under permitted development rights, depending on its size and its position relative to your boundaries and the highway. As carports often sit close to a driveway or boundary, it is worth checking the rules carefully. We can assist with planning drawings where needed. Always check with your local planning department before you build.

What is the difference between a carport and a garage?

A carport is an open-sided structure that provides simple, cost-effective shelter for your vehicle, while a garage is fully enclosed. Our carports are similar in style to our carriage houses but with open sides. If you want one or more sides enclosed, we can add clad walls and doors; if you want it entirely enclosed, a carriage house may suit you better.

Can a wooden carport be enclosed?

Yes. You can choose to enclose one or more sides with weatherboard or shiplap clad walls, as well as add doors, for enhanced protection and additional security. If you would like the carport entirely enclosed, we would suggest considering a carriage house instead.

Can I have an oak framed carport?

Yes. Our carports can be constructed in pressure-treated, sustainably sourced European softwood or in oak framing, finished with our characteristic Chart curved bracing. Our team can guide you through the timber and roofing choices.

How many cars can a carport cover?

We build single, double and triple bay carports as standard, and we also offer made-to-order sizes for larger or smaller vehicles. Our carports can easily be designed for up to 5+ cars.

Do you deliver and install carports nationwide?

Yes. All our wooden carports are designed and constructed in our workshop in Kent, and we deliver and install nationwide, from initial consultation through to final installation.

Is a wooden carport worth it?

If your main aim is to protect a vehicle from the weather, a carport is a cost-effective alternative to a full garage. It is simpler and more affordable than an enclosed building, keeps rain, frost and leaves off your car and adds an attractive structure to your home. If your needs change later, sides can be enclosed for extra shelter and security, or you can choose a fully enclosed carriage house instead.
