Oak has been used to build barns for centuries. Chart oak framed garages take this age-old tradition and create a barn style garage. Our oak framed garages are a carefully considered balance of beauty, tradition, strength and sustainability.
A Chart oak framed garage uses sawn oak posts, headers and bracing for the exposed elements of the garage on the front entrance of the building, married to sustainably sourced, pressure treated timber on covered areas.
Exposed oak and the traditional barn-style look of our garages come together to create a traditional and sustainable oak framed garage that is built to last for decades. Each bay of an oak framed garage can be adapted to your specific use, from parking to enclosed store, office or gym.
Oak is a strong wood that requires no treatment or processing. The timber we use is felled in the UK and Europe and, apart from being cut to size, is as nature made it. An incredibly dense and hardy timber, it is perfect for holding up buildings and survives well exposed to the elements. It takes many years for oak to grow and for this reason we balance the use of oak where we need it with faster growing species. You can read more about the sustainability of building with timber here.
Whether you are looking for a single garage, double, triple or even more parking bays, the same traditional style of garage will stand timelessly in your driveway, built to last decades.
An oak fronted garage offers more than just space to park a car. The design, with individual bays, means you can choose to enclose all or some of the space to create rooms that can be used for a home office, workshop, studio space or even a children’s games room. You can add double doors, a single door and window, or multiple windows with ease. Every Chart Garages building is made from timber and tailor made for you.
You can personalise the look and style of your garage even further by selecting from either pressure treated shiplap cladding or weatherboard. Roof coverings available include Onduvilla (standard), cedar shingles, Tapco tiles (synthetic slate) or prepared for natural slate or clay tiles. (For natural tiled roof options we construct the building ready for your own contractor to undertake the tiling.)
Oak framed garage sizes start from 5.4m x 3.0m (18’ x 10’) for a single bay and we can add near unlimited extra bays thanks to the extra strong construction method, with each bay up to 3.6m (12’) wide and up to 7.3m (24’) deep. If you are not sure what size you need, our guide to standard garage sizes is a useful starting point.
Our experienced team can help with the design, provide both base plans and elevated drawings needed for planning, and we manufacture, deliver and install nationwide (or you can choose a DIY kit).
Oak has been used to build barns and outbuildings for centuries, and it remains one of the most attractive and durable choices for a garage. It is an incredibly dense, hardy timber that survives well exposed to the elements and needs no treatment or processing – it is used essentially as nature made it. Compared with a softwood-only building, an oak fronted garage offers a more traditional, characterful appearance that suits period and country homes, while still being a sustainable choice when oak is used where it is seen and balanced with faster growing species elsewhere. Compared with steel or concrete prefabricated garages, a timber oak framed garage is warmer in appearance, blends naturally into garden and rural settings, and is far easier to tailor to your plot. Either way, an oak framed garage is a sustainable, long-lasting choice.
Many domestic outbuildings can be built under permitted development rights, but this depends on the size and siting of the building and on local rules, particularly in conservation areas and Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty. We can provide both base plans and elevated drawings to support a planning application where one is needed. For more on building in a protected setting, read our guide to oak framed garages for conservation areas, and always check with your local planning department before you build.
Our oak framed garages are available in our Chester range with oak posts, headers and characteristic curved bracing to create a unique and distinctive garage.

The Chester oak framed garage is a premium barn style garage with sawn oak front support posts headers and bracing. This stunning traditional looking garage is available either with a 22.5° pitch - roofing options including Onduvilla, Tapco (synthetic slate) or cedar, or alternatively we can increase the pitch to 35° ready for slate or clay tiles.
This is a timeless barn which is at home in country settings. Robustly built to stand the test of time.

What is an oak framed garage?
An oak framed garage is a traditional barn-style garage that uses sawn oak posts, headers and curved bracing for the exposed front of the building, married to sustainably sourced, pressure treated timber on the covered areas. The result is a timeless, durable garage that is built to last for decades.
How much does an oak framed garage cost?
Because every garage is handcrafted to order, the price depends on the size, number of bays and the options you choose. A single oak framed garage starts from £6,500 + VAT, with double and triple bay options also available. You can build your own specification online for a tailored quote, or get in touch with our design team.
Can an oak framed garage have a room above it?
Our oak framed garages are single-storey barn-style buildings. While they are not designed as two-storey garages with habitable rooms above, each bay can be enclosed to create a home office, workshop, studio or store at ground level. If you have a specific layout in mind, our design team can talk through what is possible.
Do oak framed garages need planning permission?
Many garages can be built under permitted development rights, but this depends on the size and location of the building and on local rules, especially in conservation areas and Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty. We can supply base plans and elevation drawings to support an application where one is required. Always check with your local planning department before you build.
What sizes of oak framed garage are available?
Sizes start from 5.4m x 3.0m (18’ x 10’) for a single bay. Thanks to the strong construction method we can add near unlimited extra bays, with each bay up to 3.6m (12’) wide and up to 7.3m (24’) deep, so we can accommodate single, double, triple and larger configurations.

Yes. We design and manufacture every building to order and deliver and install nationwide. Our team can also provide the base plans and elevation drawings needed for planning.
Why choose oak over softwood or a steel garage?
Oak is a dense, hardy timber that needs no treatment and weathers beautifully, giving a traditional barn-style look that suits period and country homes. Against a steel or concrete prefabricated garage, a timber oak framed garage is warmer in appearance, blends into garden settings and is much easier to tailor to your plot. Where we can, we use oak on the exposed front and sustainably sourced, pressure treated softwood elsewhere to balance cost and the environment.
Every oak framed garage we build is handcrafted to order, so the final price depends on the size, number of bays, cladding, roofing and options you choose. To give you a starting point, indicative prices for our most popular sizes are shown in the pricing examples below, and you can build your own specification online for a tailored quote. A single oak framed garage starts from £6,500 + VAT, with double and triple bay options also available. If you would prefer to talk it through, our design team is happy to help.
